Dear Damen Robert,
We just got back from a bike ride, and it is freaking hot outside. Now we are upstairs watching Elmo and drinking pink lemonade. Anyways, almost every day now we ride around Gilbert like we freaking own the place. I absolutely love this so much I can't stand it. You with your cute self and Spider man helmet, sit on the back in your awesome bike seat. You tell me about all the things you see while cruising. (See: flowers, cars, water, puppies, big trucks, motorcycles, etc.) No matter what you're doing, you are always down to bike ride. Sometimes we go to a park and play on the slide, sometimes we just go to cruise. I love you so much and I'm so glad we have something like this we can share. I know you probably won't remember our bike rides when you're older, but I will remember these times forever.
Love,
Mom
PS: You sang to me today. :D Thank you.

Dear Damen Robert,
You are a crazy person. Recently you have decided that naps are bullshit. Let me tell you, they are not. This is what happens when you stop taking naps. The first day, all is well and good. Second day, by the time 5 pm rolls around you are ripping the stuffing out of the couch and breaking down the walls with a sledgehammer. Day three I will be ripping my hair our, crying to the nap gods to please take you to your crib. Day four, my eyes are sunken back into my head, and I am basically a zombie. Day five would arrive and you would be running the streets, robbing people for sucker money. Day six planes start faIlling from the sky, and day seven the world has actually ended.
I am pleading with you, PLEASE, PLEASE continue taking naps. Your energetic little self has me completely worn out by noon, and I can not function without a nice two hour plop onto the couch.
Love,
Mom

Dear Damen Robert,
In honor of your 2nd birthday, I'm going to tell the story of popping you out, scratch that, getting you ripped out of my stomach. It was a chaotic and blurry day, but I think it's important for you to know what happened.
All week I had been doing every thing I could to get you out of me. No offense, but at that stage in pregnancy I would have done ANYTHING. In fact, I sort of went to some extreme measures. I would go on a nightly walk, and that last week it turned into, let's see how far I can jog my fat ass before labor starts. Four feet later I was out of breath and could barely make it home. The morning before you came into this world, I had made some nasty tea concoction that was supposed to instantly throw me into contractions! After waiting not so patiently for an hour or so I went to bed.
This is where the fun started. Around seven or so in the morning, I woke up with the worst headache I've ever experienced. After coming to terms with the ice pick between my eyes, I waddled downstairs to get some Tylenol. Shit hit the fan. I told your grandma that I was having some problems. When I tried to walk up the stairs, I realized my vision was blurry, and I could really remember how to take steps. Somehow I actually made it up to my room, where I violently shook your father until he woke up from his hibernation. He made the excellent decision to check my blood pressure. (Thank you grandpa, for the nifty portable blood pressure machine.) My number was about 190 over something ridiculous. When I called the nurse on call, she said, and I quote, "GO TO THE HOSPITAL." My foggy brain understood this as, take your sweet time and decide if you're really going to the hospital right now. Luckily your daddy took control of the situation and threw my ass in the car.
When we got to the ER, he tried to drop me off at the front so he could go park. Fail. I stood in the road until someone grabbed my arm. At this point I had forgotten how to walk. The registration nurse was asking me my name, social security number, how I had gotten to the hospital. I had no freaking idea who I was, or what I was doing. All I knew was that my head FREAKING hurt and that I was a huge pregopotomus. Needless to say, they rushed us back to a room right away. From here on out, I was shifting in and out of consciousness. A nurse tried to get me to pee in a cup and put on the gown. I knew what I was supposed to do, but my brain couldn't tell me how to do it. I stood in the bathroom crying. They hooked me up to a whole bunch of machines, to monitor my heart, your heart, my blood pressure. My blood pressure was 230 over an even more ridiculous number. They thought I had to have stroked.
I was completely gone, I remember coming to and asking if my dad was there yet, and at one point I recognized your daddy. Next thing I knew, They were asking me to lean forward so they could stick a needle in my back. It wasn't actually that bad, the operating room cold was the worst thing. Two seconds later, I was laid out on the table. "You're going to feel some pressure," and you were right in front of me.
That day went from, OH SHIT I'M GOING TO DIE, to the happiest and best day of my life. I couldn't believe the little creature that your father and I had created. I love you Damen Robert, and your chaotic birth couldn't have been more fitting for the crazy little person you are today. Happy birthday baby, I wouldn't have had it any other way.
Love,
Mom

Dear Damen Robert,
Today is mother's day and I'd like to make you some promises. Just to let you know, I formed these promises when I was just a little girl. Very early on in life I decided what kind of mother I would be.
First off, I will always be here for you. I want for you to be able to ALWAYS, no matter what, be able to come to me and talk about anything and everything. I want you to ALWAYS know where I am. I will never leave you with someone else and forget about you. I will always come back. I will be there for every birthday; if it is not physically possible, I will at least call. I will never move and change my phone number. I will be at every graduation possible. I will never abandon you.
These things being said, I want you to know even though your grandmother is out of the picture, your great grandmother taught me how to be a mom. She taught me to love and respect people. She showed me what a real mother is. While your grandma showed me what not to do, your great grandma showed me how I want to treat my children.
I love you so much and I will try my damned hardest to be what great grandma is to me, to you; a good mommy.
Love,
mom <3

Dear Damen Robert,
Yesterday you scared the LIVING shit out of me. You are to never pull something like that EVER again. Before your nap you were perfectly yourself. Before you laid down to sleep we were watching Elmo and the Bookaneers and eating snacks. When you woke up, you made my heart stop.
I heard you squiggling around and it was the right time for you to be waking up. You were a little sad, but nothing that can't be caused by waking up from a nightmare about empty sippy cups or scary things of that nature. We headed out to the living room and I tried to show you Toy Story 3. You would not have it. You wouldn't even look at it. The fussing continued. I thought to myself, who the heck wouldn't want to watch Toy Story? So... we headed down to get some water and you started making a gagging sound. I tried telling you it was okay and to just get it out. Water seemed like a good decision, but you were starting to get lethargic.
Five minutes later you were fighting to stay conscious, and I was on the phone freaking out at your poor daddy. You were laid out on the ground, staring off into space. Your breathing was shallow and your usually pink puffy lips were as pale as your skin. THIS IS NOT ALLOWED. My brain was going crazy. Am I going to have to do CPR on my child right now? Why can't I get off the phone and call a damn ambulance? You started to drift back and forth between space and whining. There was no car seat, so your dad rushed home from clinicals and took us back to the ER of the hospital he had been at all day.
While in the car, you said your first words since you had woken up. "Hi daddy". This was such a relief and I finally caught a breath. After getting checked in at the emergency room, you were your happy, destructive little self again. Three hours later, the doctor said it was early pneumonia or bronchitis. Sure. Your father and I decided not to get blood work done or the IV fluids they wanted to push, because you were our little boy again. Now since we've been home I've been kicking myself in the ass for that. What if something major is going on that the blood work could have shown the doctor?
Baby boy, I don't know what happened to you yesterday, but it was one of the scariest moments of my life. You are never allowed to do anything of this sort EVER again. Please be okay.
I can't wait for you to wake up from your nap so we can play.
Love,
Mom
