Dear Damen Robert,
"So, Mom. Do you want to talk about penises?"
Last night while you and Sissy were in the bath you were being your normal curious self. I was on the phone with Daddy while watching you guys smack each other with toys and squirt water in each others eyes. You know, just like any other normal bath time routine.
While I was listening to Daddy talk about his day, I hear you ask, "What do girls have on their bottoms?" I told you to hang on a second and listened to Daddy's story. When he got off the phone, I had to explain.
"Girls have vaginas, and boys have penises." I said, as nonchalantly as I possibly could.
"You know, I can sit down to pee." You were also very matter of fact.
"That's really cool. Girls sit down to pee too."
"What do mommys and daddys have?"
*Insert explanation of what parts mommys and daddys have*
You are standing in the bath contemplating life at this point.
After a long pause, I hear this gem:
"So, Mom. Do you want to talk about penises?"
At this point I am covering my face with a towel so you don't think I'm laughing at you.
When I regained my composure, I told you it's not polite to talk about penises and vaginas. If you have any questions, you can absolutely ask Mommy or Daddy anything, but don't talk about them with your friends or strangers.
After another couple seconds of deep thought you said, "I learned how to say 'I love you back' at church. Cool huh?"
And life moves onward.
I know it's not even close to the first or last anatomy discussion we're going to have. I know it's just the beginning of the strange life discussions we'll have over the course of your childhood and teenage years. It is certainly something I will remember forever. You're hilarious. I love your curious mind and inquisitive spirit. You will truly go places if you keep asking questions. Ask questions until our ears bleed.
I love you forever baby boy,
Mommy
